New on DVD: In A Better World 0
Say what you want about having to “read the words”, but at least foreign cinema offers a different point of view, and operates free from the “maximum profit” and “easy consumption” big studio philosophies.

What’s clear after watching “Inside Job” is that we are all fucked.
In recent years, much has been made about the homosexual overtones of “Top Gun”, but I did not get that vibe at all. I watched intently, trying to pick up clues that might suggest any homoerotic or outright gay themes, but none could be detected.
“The King’s Speech” is built around a fantastic performance by Colin Firth.
Maybe you thought the film was technically spectacular in 1982, but maybe it’s time to watch it again. “Tron” is a fucking joke.
After my viewing, I felt that I wasn’t quite cool enough to “get it”. “Black Swan” is an art film at it’s core, and my jeans aren’t tight enough to appreciate it.
“The Fighter” is at a disadvantage. To be a really special boxing film, you’ve got to bring something new to the table. It’s nearly impossible to be original when every angle has been covered.
Not often, within a single film, will you see an Oscar winning performance (from a deserving Michael Douglas) surrounded by an absolutely dreadful supporting cast.
“The Social Network” will benefit from the fact that it’s a solid film in a rather unspectacular year. Though it was an accomplishment to take this story and make it interesting, that doesn’t mean that it’s wildly entertaining. It’s not.
“Inception” has so much depth, and so many layers, it would take a genius mind to even assemble such a story.
Incredible scripts like this one don’t come around ever year. That’s why you don’t see a new Toy Story film each summer. It was eleven years between the second and third installment, and Disney made it well worth the wait.
I look forward to the next time I see a truly great film. Unfortunately, I know, it is going to be a while. …
