New on DVD: In A Better World 0

Say what you want about having to “read the words”, but at least foreign cinema offers a different point of view, and operates free from the “maximum profit” and “easy consumption” big studio philosophies.

First Time Viewing: Top Gun

First Time Viewing: Top Gun 4

In recent years, much has been made about the homosexual overtones of “Top Gun”, but I did not get that vibe at all. I watched intently, trying to pick up clues that might suggest any homoerotic or outright gay themes, but none could be detected.

New on DVD: Black Swan

New on DVD: Black Swan 1

After my viewing, I felt that I wasn’t quite cool enough to “get it”. “Black Swan” is an art film at it’s core, and my jeans aren’t tight enough to appreciate it.

New on DVD: The Fighter

New on DVD: The Fighter 0

“The Fighter” is at a disadvantage. To be a really special boxing film, you’ve got to bring something new to the table. It’s nearly impossible to be original when every angle has been covered.

First Time Viewing: Wall Street

First Time Viewing: Wall Street 0

New on DVD: The Social Network

New on DVD: The Social Network 0

“The Social Network” will benefit from the fact that it’s a solid film in a rather unspectacular year. Though it was an accomplishment to take this story and make it interesting, that doesn’t mean that it’s wildly entertaining. It’s not.

New on DVD: Toy Story 3

New on DVD: Toy Story 3 1

Incredible scripts like this one don’t come around ever year. That’s why you don’t see a new Toy Story film each summer. It was eleven years between the second and third installment, and Disney made it well worth the wait.
